Hello all,
Here's what I've figured out thus far.
There is currently NO possible way in my knowledge to get any drivers working with x64 Vista with the Conexant audio chips, which is what everyone who is having issues has on their respective notebooks. However, there's a lot more hope if you can cope with only running the x86 Vista ;-)
Basically as far as I can tell the standard xp drivers should work just fine as I am using them right now on a Compaq V2575 which uses the Conexant AC-Link Audio. Download the respective driver from the HP website for your model, generally the file you download will be a self-extracting archive that will pop itself somewhere (Usually C:\swsetup\some subdir) and then it will automatically run the program to install the drivers itself, cancel that program, find the program (or any and all exe's for that driver package in the swsetup directory) and make sure that you set windows xp with service pack 2 compatibility for them.
I'm sure manually installing the drivers would also work, so really either way there should be no issue with sound as long as you're willing to stick with x86 for now.

I have the hp zd8000 and I have sound. I forgot where on the internet I went to to get vista beta driver for a conexant ac'97 or realtek ac'97.
I don't know which audio chip you have but don't give up. Try here

I went to the Windows Update within the Vista Control Panel (!) and from there the driver for my Realtek AC'97 on-board sound was downloaded and installed.

I had already tried the Realtek Vista beta drivers and everytime I tried to install them in x64 vista I would get a "The path cannot be found" error when it tried to install the driver. I however never tried the whole intel ac97 workaround that they were explaining in that thread, however I did notice that someone had mentioned they couldn't get it to work in vista, as it was primarily an xp x64 workaround.
I'd be interested to hear exactly what driver you used (and which audio chip your particular zd8000 has, I used to sell these things so I know there's a ton of submodels of the zd8000 hehe) and what process you used to make it work, but I've already gone through the trouble of installing x86 vista so this is probably more just for my peace of mind at this point as i'm not really wanting to go through the whole 2-3 hour install again.

I have an HP Pavilion dv5035 and also had problems with my AC97 audio and modem (same hardware I believe). My issue now is after problems with Vista, I uninstalled it from a separate partition. Now my Audio and Modem are no longer found. XP simply does not recognize that the devices are even installed. I tried rolling back the regestry, but no luck there either.

I have hp a1320n and i went and updated beta drivers ac-97. i have sound but I cant control my inputs chg inputs they are all on. cant mute anything but master volume under xp everything worked. Do i need to d/l something else. I have the 6060 version of drivers

I'm just about to solder in a new audio (Vista) chip into my HP Pavilion ze5375us Notebook..! Same problem with the Conexant AC-Link Audio. No Audio..
I've tried every which way to get that driver from HP to install. I tried the Audio64.zip with the command line.. No good either. I tried 6 other drivers 10 different ways..Same result.. Help is on the way........Read on..
I finally got a hold of a good HP tech who is "Very aware" of this issue with Vista. He said that HP is "presently" working on and going to release a driver shortly that will solve this issue. So check their site for it.

I'm just about to solder in a Vista Audio chip into my HP Pavilion ze5375us..!!! No Audio drivers for "Conexant AC-Link Audio". I've tried 10 different drivers 10 different ways...Same result.. No Audio. Sooooooo.....
I was lucky and got a hold of a good HP Tech today and he said that HP is "very aware" of this Conexant AC-Link Audio driver issue with Vista. A driver is in the works at HP right now. He felt that it will be posted on HP's download site pretty soon. HP is receiving hundreds of emails and calls everyday about this.
That's good news. Check HP's site for the released driver. It shouldn't be too long according to the tech.

I have a m7160n Media Center PC and had the same sound issues. I went to the HP website and downloaded and installed the latest XP updated drivers for my computer while running Vista, and now my Vist a has sound.

Installing the drivers from the hp website works with the 32 bit vista, but not 64 bit vista, buts thats the last time i check, there may be new that i dont know, but thats what i experienced.

I have the same problem with my Pavilion DV1760BR. I have tried to install a sound drive from HP site and from Windows Update, there is an icon and at Control Panel the message is that the driver is OK, but I have no sound. HP Technical Suport said that it can be a phisical failure. Does anyone have a similar situation?
I have also tried the Realtak driver (no sucess). The sounds works with external speakers or headphones.
